John Welwood
John Welwood, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist specializing in integrating Eastern spiritual wisdom and Western psychology. In the early 1980s he emerged as a major figure in the fields of transpersonal psychology and East/West psychology. He developed the term “spiritual bypassing” to point to the tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to avoid facing unresolved emotional and psychological issues.
In addition to eight books, he has published more than fifty articles on relationship, psychotherapy, meditation, and spiritual development. His current teaching is focused on embodied psychospiritual work. He also trains health professionals in “psychotherapy in a spiritual framework.” He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and they have often taught together on psychospiritual work and conscious relationship.
