Ocean of Dharma Quotes of the Week was launched on April 9, 2003. Carolyn Gimian, who initiated the Quotes of the Week, selects several quotes each week from the published and unpublished work of the great Buddhist author, Chögyam Trungpa, whose name (Chögyam) means "Ocean of Dharma" in Tibetan.
One hundred and eight subscribers signed up for the e-mail list on the first day. Now there are close to 10,000 readers subscribed. With today's quote, we launch a new look for the Ocean of Dharma e-mail, with a number of new features. The design is similar to the cover design of the book Ocean of Dharma: The Everyday Wisdom of Chögyam Trungpa, which presents 365 short quotes.
We'd love to hear your comments about the new look, so we’re giving away five copies of the Ocean of Dharma book! Leave a comment below, and you'll be entered in a contest to win a copy. Congrats to our winners: Germaine, Edmund, Leslie, Christine, and Katharine! Thank you for your comments. Stay tuned for more giveaways from Shambhala Publications.

I would love to win this book - thanks for having a giveaway!

Love the new updated look of your website! I love getting the quotes in my mailbox everyday, and it is often the first thing I read. Other times, I read it in the midst of a busy day- but it is always the perfect time. The wisdom helps ground me, reminding me of what is really important. Instead of getting carried away, CTR reminds me that now is always the perfect moment to find the wisdom available to us all. Thanks for the hard work you do to send the quotes to me and everyone else. So helpful!

Hello Carolyn,
I know that Trungpa wrote many brilliant books ( probably collections of his talks ) but the truth is that he was absolutely an alcoholic
who crashed an auto, killing his first wife and was a sexual predator with his students as you can read in another book by a former student. I complained about this to another teacher who said, that Trungpa was simply a follwer of the "crazy wisdom" school. As if that excuses all.He did die young, of alcoholism. I do not think that though he left good books, he deserves unqualified admiration andy more than Heidegger, who was a brillaint man - and also a member of the Nazi party.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:09 am
I love the new format! So much easier to read. Thanks for the giveaway!

I like your new format. Thank you for such a magnificent drop of deep blue dharma!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:11 am
We are born, I believe, with certain beliefs that are sometimes hidden deep within us. Yet we are brought up to believe certain things that somehow do not seem to be the truth. But, one day, we start to question and begin a journey to find our truth. For me, I have been on the journey for a lifetime and yet still struggle to know my truth. My struggle has led me to many books that are providing me not only with knowledge but perceptions far beyond those I would have ever thought possible yet seem more real than the teachings of my youth. "Looking Anew at the Ocean of Dharma" by Chogyam Tungpa, a person I have come to know through reading, would provide me with 365 Teachings, one to focus on each day of every year, on living my life with courage and compassion, a goal I wake up with each and every day. Thank you for presenting the opportunity for me to receive this book through chance. Namaste, Jane.

Receiving every week the quotes of Chögyam Trungpa is really a present. It helps me in my practice of living life everyday in awareness with an open heart, swimming in the ocean of samsara truly open to whatever it comes. This new format is clean, and beautifully arranged. Congratulations. From Brazil, Paula

It is interesting, I find the new look visually appealing but I found the old layout easier to read....more simple I think. But maybe I just need to get used to the new....and then it'll feel just right.

Rejoice!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:15 am
The quotes chosen represent the real pith of Rinpoche's teaching and reflect something of what it was like to interact with him in person. Thank you so much for your work. I like the new format a lot.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:15 am
Really like the look. One suggestion: make the text font larger. And change font from TR (too passe for the look)

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:22 am
Well, I do think that the new design is beautiful and elegant, but not as beautiful and elegant as the editor who sends out the quotes. This I say on the eve of 32 years of being married to her.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:23 am
I appreciate these quotes everyday and and moved by the wisdom and tenderness of Chogyam Trungpa, although I am perplexed by how to understand what I know of his life. I'll stay open.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:23 am
I always liked the personal nature of the delivery of quotes...but this new site honours not only the profound writing/thought of Trungpa, it also honours the interconnective nature of the internet medium and the diverse aims and goals of Shambhala.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:23 am
I like the new format -- not having to scroll down to read the quote (which is now in a prominent typeface and position) is very nice.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:23 am
Every quote that I receive is a precious gift, Like the bell calling us to meditation, the quotes call me to the present and silence.
Thanks so much!
Best,
Mary

I love having a small burst of concentrated thought in my inbox and the new format is nice to look at. Visually interesting.
To respond to Earl above - it is true that Trungpa made mistakes in his life and was certainly a slave to alcohol. Everyone in life has their own hurdles to overcome and their own challenges. It is important to recognize that the power of his writings isn't diminished by his personal failings - much like Heidegger, Neitzche or Rand. Most of the profound thinkers are so thoughtful because they have had challenges in their life.
Growing up in suburbia and living a comfortable, safe, sheltered life without challenges or loss doesn't force many people to think or examine on a level that would produce works of this kind. So yes, he had problems and we can learn from that too.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:24 am
Design and color are appealing..
This is the branch of Buddhism that I most relate to and have been following it through Pema Chodrin's work.
I will look forward it!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:24 am
Wow! What a difference! This is a huge improvement and you have done a great job with it. It is accessible and much more engaging. I love the daily quotes, and am most happy to enter a contest for a book of value.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:27 am
Love the new look. Thank you for taking the time to make these quotes available, they are a good source of inspiration for people who like me have to walk the path alone without the support of any local group.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:28 am
So much easier and more inviting to read...thank you so much for your effort! It's great!

Although I have been a subscriber to your mag, and a fairly regular attendee of events/classes at your NYC branch, I just received this. I am a quotaholic, so this feed my weird but usualy virtuous addiction. I appreciated the comments, in partcular the one citing the master's flaws. As a Christian who also honors Buddhism, I know that we are all imperfect, and that is why we all practice our respective faiths -- all must go on, get over, and get with reality.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:32 am
It all flows beautifully! I love how there were 108 initial subscribers: he must have had a chuckle at this ;)
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:32 am
I live in Oklahoma, where Buddhism and Sangha are not readily available in the community. The quotes keep me connected to all of you. Thank you. I enjoy the new look; peaceful and welcoming. Thanks.

I love the new format and the information. I love this site for its information, inspiration and quality of thought put into each selection of books and quotations. Makes my day. I copy many into my journal to mediate on during the day. The book is a valuable asset for all of us who follow the path of enlightenment.

"Once there is bewilderment, a sort of double take begins to happen of wanting to find out where you were, what you are, where you are at." -Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche
Thank you for helping us recognize where we were, what and were we are Shambhala...keep up the incredible work.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:48 am
Good Morning Carolyn,
The new format is so pleasing to the eye. I like the blend of beauty in the content and beauty in the presentation. The format enhances the experience of reading and taking in the content. Very welcoming.
Thank you for the inspiration to do this and the hard work of bringing it into fruition.
With appreciation,
Kathleen

I have the book Shambala since a long time and enjoy the general philosophy of basic goodness. I employ this attitude and the "thinking" meditation on a daily basis for myself and others, with nice results in terms of consciousness, and general mental well being. Have been receiving Carolyn's emails for some years now...Its a natural and welcome transition to the new format, which is refreshing and offers greater access to this inspiring body of work!
p.s. the way Mr Trungpa lived his life is irrelevent in the light of his simple, powerful and beneficial wisdom that will continue to enlighten and illuminate us all helping to shift humans away from frivolous pursuit of ego based mentality!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:50 am
I love the new look. It is very readable and "bright" looking.
thanks so much
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:50 am
Love the new look, especially how it conveys ocean and Dharma visually - beautiful!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:52 am
I like the way the type stands out more effectively from the background. It is a fresh new look, with pleasing colors and designs.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:52 am
The new look is certainly easier to read and also more aesthetically pleasing. It helps to have the quotes presented in a calm and beautiful way, and I'm reminded that both the words and their context carry meaning. Thank you!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:52 am
It looks great. Such a joy to see this in my emailbox. T.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 8:58 am
I am new to the newsletter, but I think it looks really nice.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:00 am
The new presentation is visually pleasing and elegant. It is so enjoyable to read the quotations that have been laid out in such beautiful design.I could print them and frame them, if I like.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:00 am
New design looks good. CT was obviously an incredibly charismatic personality. I find his lifestyle troubling and to me, some of his writings are helpful and others seem glib and obscure. But I'd be happy to win a book.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:03 am
Your new format honors Space.
The printing is sharp and precise
The message , as always, boundless Beauty and Wisdom
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:03 am
I am searching for my truth. I am recently emerging from under the ice and it is cold and breezy on my skin. I don't know how to deal with the elements as I have been protected under this sheet of ice that helped me to avoid life and people. I wish to have this book to assist me along my path... to LIFE!
Thank you
Suzy

I love the new look! I have really enjoyed the ocean of dharma quotes but now it will be visually enjoyable as well!! Thank you!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:05 am
The new layout is much cleaner and easier on the eyes. Nice job!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:08 am
The new look is quite refreshing and reflects the brilliance of my root guru. Thanks for bringing his words to a high standard of graphic design. Cheers to Carolyn and everyone who made this welcome change happen!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:10 am
Beautiful selection of color and image. the peacefulness of blue and the ever changing in -the- moment teaching of the ocean. i used to live on an island and journaled every day by the ocean. change is constant: clear/hazy,soft/sharp, gentle/fierce. the new image and color will be an ever present reminder. the new format is easier to forward to my children and friends who don't receive them. i am selective in the ones i offer.
thank you for this gift.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:13 am
thanks for the quotes. the new format is great.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:17 am
These quotes are a breath of fresh air every time you send them out. Thank you.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:17 am
Dear Carolyn,
Thank you for such a beautiful presentation of the transcendent wisdom brought to us by Chögyam Trungpa. Thank you also for "Smiling at Fear."
Perhaps instead of condemning him for his path of mishaps, we could instead say to ourselves, "My goodness! If such a wayward man can find such depths of wisdom within, perhaps I, with my little transgressions, can find some wisdom within myself."
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:19 am
The new look is wonderful wehn I look at it my mail on the web, but I'm a dinosaur and tend to use an email app that disables html, so the "look" is pretty much the same for me, maybe a little less readable, but the quotations are still very precious. Please keep them coming!
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:22 am
Easy to read, lovely apprearance. My first impression was "nice, but I liked the simple look of the previous format" i.e. not advertising anything. But I can enjoy this too.
Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:22 am
I am currently watching the funeral services of a slain officer in Toronto. The wheel of life turns. These daily quotes from OceanDharma truly give meaning and significance to all that awaits us in this very brief sojourn on earth. Henry
