Looking Anew at the Ocean of Dharma

January 18, 2011

Ocean of Dharma Quotes of the Week was launched on April 9, 2003. Carolyn Gimian, who initiated the Quotes of the Week, selects several quotes each week from the published and unpublished work of the great Buddhist author, Chögyam Trungpa, whose name (Chögyam) means "Ocean of Dharma" in Tibetan.

One hundred and eight subscribers signed up for the e-mail list on the first day. Now there are close to 10,000 readers subscribed. With today's quote, we launch a new look for the Ocean of Dharma e-mail, with a number of new features. The design is similar to the cover design of the book Ocean of Dharma: The Everyday Wisdom of Chögyam Trungpa, which presents 365 short quotes.

We'd love to hear your comments about the new look, so we’re giving away five copies of the Ocean of Dharma book! Leave a comment below, and you'll be entered in a contest to win a copy. Congrats to our winners: Germaine, Edmund, Leslie, Christine, and Katharine! Thank you for your comments. Stay tuned for more giveaways from Shambhala Publications.

Love the new updated look of your website! I love getting the quotes in my mailbox everyday, and it is often the first thing I read. Other times, I read it in the midst of a busy day- but it is always the perfect time. The wisdom helps ground me, reminding me of what is really important. Instead of getting carried away, CTR reminds me that now is always the perfect moment to find the wisdom available to us all. Thanks for the hard work you do to send the quotes to me and everyone else. So helpful!

  • Earl McHugh says:

    Hello Carolyn,
I know that Trungpa wrote many brilliant books ( probably collections of his talks ) but the truth is that he was absolutely an alcoholic
who crashed an auto, killing his first wife and was a sexual predator with his students as you can read in another book by a former student. I complained about this to another teacher who said, that Trungpa was simply a follwer of the "crazy wisdom" school. As if that excuses all.He did die young, of alcoholism. I do not think that though he left good books, he deserves unqualified admiration andy more than Heidegger, who was a brillaint man - and also a member of the Nazi party.

  • Jane Loik says:

We are born, I believe, with certain beliefs that are sometimes hidden deep within us. Yet we are brought up to believe certain things that somehow do not seem to be the truth. But, one day, we start to question and begin a journey to find our truth. For me, I have been on the journey for a lifetime and yet still struggle to know my truth. My struggle has led me to many books that are providing me not only with knowledge but perceptions far beyond those I would have ever thought possible yet seem more real than the teachings of my youth. "Looking Anew at the Ocean of Dharma" by Chogyam Tungpa, a person I have come to know through reading, would provide me with 365 Teachings, one to focus on each day of every year, on living my life with courage and compassion, a goal I wake up with each and every day. Thank you for presenting the opportunity for me to receive this book through chance. Namaste, Jane.

I love having a small burst of concentrated thought in my inbox and the new format is nice to look at. Visually interesting.

To respond to Earl above - it is true that Trungpa made mistakes in his life and was certainly a slave to alcohol. Everyone in life has their own hurdles to overcome and their own challenges. It is important to recognize that the power of his writings isn't diminished by his personal failings - much like Heidegger, Neitzche or Rand. Most of the profound thinkers are so thoughtful because they have had challenges in their life.

Growing up in suburbia and living a comfortable, safe, sheltered life without challenges or loss doesn't force many people to think or examine on a level that would produce works of this kind. So yes, he had problems and we can learn from that too.

Although I have been a subscriber to your mag, and a fairly regular attendee of events/classes at your NYC branch, I just received this. I am a quotaholic, so this feed my weird but usualy virtuous addiction. I appreciated the comments, in partcular the one citing the master's flaws. As a Christian who also honors Buddhism, I know that we are all imperfect, and that is why we all practice our respective faiths -- all must go on, get over, and get with reality.

I have the book Shambala since a long time and enjoy the general philosophy of basic goodness. I employ this attitude and the "thinking" meditation on a daily basis for myself and others, with nice results in terms of consciousness, and general mental well being. Have been receiving Carolyn's emails for some years now...Its a natural and welcome transition to the new format, which is refreshing and offers greater access to this inspiring body of work!

p.s. the way Mr Trungpa lived his life is irrelevent in the light of his simple, powerful and beneficial wisdom that will continue to enlighten and illuminate us all helping to shift humans away from frivolous pursuit of ego based mentality!

Beautiful selection of color and image. the peacefulness of blue and the ever changing in -the- moment teaching of the ocean. i used to live on an island and journaled every day by the ocean. change is constant: clear/hazy,soft/sharp, gentle/fierce. the new image and color will be an ever present reminder. the new format is easier to forward to my children and friends who don't receive them. i am selective in the ones i offer.
    thank you for this gift.

    Dear Carolyn,
Thank you for such a beautiful presentation of the transcendent wisdom brought to us by Chögyam Trungpa. Thank you also for "Smiling at Fear."

Perhaps instead of condemning him for his path of mishaps, we could instead say to ourselves, "My goodness! If such a wayward man can find such depths of wisdom within, perhaps I, with my little transgressions, can find some wisdom within myself."

  • Bob McPherson says:

    Dear Mrs. Gimian,

I find the new format to be as much an advertisement, as a presentation of The Vidyadhara's teachings. The quote is smaller in proportion to the whole tastfully laid out display, but, I was more content, when Chogyam Trungpa WAS the content, not the heading/ad.

I suppose it would be allright if you could make a printer-friendly tab for those of us who print these messages out. If there were a way of printing only the quote, that would be helpful....

Otherwise, as always, I am thankful to you for reminding me of my Guru!

    Yours truly,

    Bob McPherson, Edmonton.

Whether one focuses attention on this or that aspect of Chogyam Trungpa's life, to the extent your delivery of his message helps to wake us up, the more likely we will find, as suggested in today's quote, "enough strength, exertion and energy to view things as they are, personally, properly, and directly." Your efforts are much appreciated. Happy Anniversary.

Right now a child of 9 came up, just like the apparency of the whole world, the child was both bubbling and boiling with the energy of frustration (dukkha? What is that and in all its forms?)and jammed one hand to the keyboard creating a string of jumbled letters. Visible foam on the invisible ocean and as we allow the tides of breath what can happen? So what is Dharma in its wholeness and its apparent aspects, in its apparent levels of 'known-ness' and corresponding 'unknown-ness', as well as the radical unknown-ness or wholly unfathomable that premeates it all? Can we work with this kind of question until it brings us again and again to the point of bewilderment?

The new format is lovely. Perhaps you could offer an option to receive in "plain text" (old format) or the new "html" -- this way, your subscribers with less connectivity can still receive the quotes (the more important aspect of the subscription.)

I have discovered an amazing auspiciousness with the timing of specific inspiring quotes of Chogyam Trungpa and the specifics of the context of my own life's day-to-day challenges. I really look forward each week to the jewels in my mailbox. Thank you so very much!! I love the teachings and the way he writes of them. His books always speak to the immediacy of my experience. I realize how hard the work is and I am grateful!
The font of the new format is lovely; however the blue design throws me off a little--so many great Tibetan symbols that could be used rather than this design. At least it is different and the colors are nice. Blessings to you to keep up the great work. I could not have understood my own life so many times without Chogyam Trungpa's books. The "Myth of Freedom" is one of a kind.

  • John L Brown says:

The real point in these teachings are not the product of insights, leading to a conclusion; derived from a series of meaningful words, irrespective the source. The point is to see, or perceive, for the first time; or awaken, or recall, the factual quality inherent in the simplest thought or perception. The entire philosophy constituting experience, and direct perception lie within the background within which all perceptual manifestation arise. Of necessity, thought, perception, and creativity must operate within a field of potentiality; acquired knowledge, or direct insight. A preexisting field of knowledge; constituting the said background, must, of necessity explain the potential from which direct insight is even possible. The truth we are seeking is already established within the background of experience, available if and when the "doorways of perecption" are cleansed.

I think the look delivers what anyone hopes in change which is bringing about a better thing. It's easier to locate the quote which makes it easier and faster to read, and in turn, makes it easier to digest. I try not to pay attention to when the emails arrive that way each time it is a little surprise in my day. The content of the emails always seems prudent to my path through life. I enjoy each and every one of them upon receiving and sometimes more than once when I look back to old emails.

It is like a farmer that plants w/care and planning. These new images and format allow the "bijas" of the Vidyadhara to be planted in the "best" ground to inspire others. It is expressing the dharma w/ elegance and beauty that is there already.

    High Pitch

    Awareness limpid clear and bright
Glowing warm a heart of purest gold
That high pitch voice, song birds on the wind
A touch, the breath of space herself

The sun does a double-take when you feel like shining

Words ring true and ripple on and on
Transparency, the teardrops from your eyes
Please smile again on an average earthly morning
Your light will carry us until we meet in sleep

    Binding factor,

This quotes speaks to the expenditure of energy. If our use of money unbalanced, Trungpa suggests that our use of energy in our lives is probably also unbalanced. If we are spending too much,, i.e. credit card debt, it's a good bet we are overextended in many places in our lives. This is an important book.
