Transmission Happens When Nobody's Home

May 28, 2010

The concept of empowerment is based on personal transformation and transmission. It is based on the notion that nobody's at home. At the same time, the house is not locked. It's open. There may still be a cigarette burning in the ashtray, or the coffee pot may be hot on the stove, but fundamentally nobody's at home. In other words, a state of mind of openness is taking place. The emotionality that goes along with our state of mind is still active, but nobody's actually fighting for home territory anymore. Openness takes place completely. When that begins to happen, then real transformation and transmission can take place.

From Talk Three of "Empowerment," an unpublished seminar given in Berkeley, California, May 1976. Edited from the transcript.
