Way of the BodhisattvaThe Way of the Bodhisattva
by Shantideva, translated by Padmakara Translation Group
Shambhala Library edition

All those who slight me to my face
Or do to me some other evil,
Even if they blame me or slander me,
May they attain the fortune of enlightenment!

May I be a guard for those who are protectorless,
A guide for those who journey on the road.
For those who wish to cross the water,
May I be a boat, a raft, a bridge.

Working with the public daily ofter leaves me drained and far from practicing my ideals. I love the Shambhala publications for helping me keep the main thing, the main thing, especially in my work as an outreach librarian in the inner city. May we all live in such a way to allow for a better, kinder, more joyful world.

This was of help to me while going through what could have been a particularly nasty divorce. In repeating this to myself (often), I managed to stay focused on and go on to realize what was truly important ... my best and most humble new life. Without the snippets of The Way of the Bodhisattva that friends and sometimes strangers sent my way, I shudder to think of what could have been. I would love to have my very own copy of The Way of the Bodhisattva.

I aspire to be a bodhisattva... I have briefly read my fathers copy of No time to loose by Pema Chodron but didn't get the chance to delve into the depths of the read that I would have liked. This book has been on my list for quite some time. I have filled my library with Shambhala Library editions of all Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche for their easy carrying size and functional format... next is Pema Chodrons library editions and this book which would be a welcome edition for furthering my journey on the path to helping others ease suffering. Sounds cliche and corney but its true!!! That is what I feel my purpose is these days. Thank you for the opportunity to obtain this book!

I'm not sure whether my desire to reach a point of deep peace is purely for the good of others... I know at this point in my life, part of my desire is based in ego... Or at least ego plays a part in spurring me on. If I were to win the book I would read it at some point... I have lots of books to read. If somebody else were to win it - great! One guy (Kevin Prince) has stated that it is one of HH The Dalai Lama's treasured reads and that he would love to read it himself. Maybe he should win it :)

For anyone who has taken their bodhisattva vows or aspires to. Having just received teachings based on the text 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas (composed by the monk Ngulchu Thogme Zangpo), I believe the enlightened perspective of such realised masters and bodhisattvas like Shantideva inspire us and touch that potential in us. These "old" texts are timeless in that way, and remind us that our noble aspirations are timeless. They give us that strength.

For years I have been leading discussion courses on this precious text at the Rime Buddhist Center of Kansas City, and been blessed to attend teachings on it by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This is my favorite translation for its ability to capture much of its poetic beauty. I gave away my last copy and would love to have one to carry and give away again. Thanks for your generosity, in the spirit of Shantideva. Om Mani Padme Hum!
