Francis Haar is widely known for his contributions to Hawaii, where he was designated as one of the "living treasures" in 1984. His long career, however, brought him from his native Hungary to Paris and later to Japan, where he lived for twenty years. His photographs have been exhibited extensively in Japan and the United States, and his works are included in leading public collections. Documentary filmmaker and recipient of many awards, Haar has also published numerous collections of his photographs.
