Boulder, Colorado, the summer of 1978. After completing a medical residency in psychiatry at Yale University, I had just moved to Boulder with my family.

In 1980, I traveled with His Holiness the Sixteenth Karmapa to the U.S. During this visit, I had the great fortune to meet Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and experience his sharp presence and kind and gentle heart. I was fortunate to also hear him translate some of His Holiness Karmapa’s short teachings.

In the spring of 2002, following a short bout with cardiac problems, I decided to move most of my books from my university office to my home study to allow me to work in a more relaxing environment. By some odd chance—probably karmically inspired—the very first books I grabbed down off the shelf were old, yellow, held-together-by-Scotch-tape copies of Chögyam Trungpa’s Meditation in Action and Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism. These were the first books of Trungpa Rinpoche’s I had read, and to me, they remain his very best.

TO EXPERIENCE FEARLESSNESS, IT IS NECESSARY TO EXPERIENCE FEAR

Commentary
The essence of cowardice is to not acknowledge the reality of fear. Fear takes many forms. We are afraid of death, we are afraid that we can't handle the demands of our life, and there is abrupt fear, or panic, when new situations occur. Fear is expressed as restlessness: how we move, how we talk, how we chew our nails, how we sometimes put our hands in our pockets uselessly. We have to realize our fear and reconcile ourselves with fear. However, acknowledging fear is not a cause for depression. Because we possess such fear, we can potentially experience fearlessness.
