One of the more legendary Tibetan Buddhist texts that has made its way to the west is The Tibetan Book of the Dead, or Bardo Thodrol, more literally translated as “Liberation Through Hearing [in] the Intermediate State.” Bardo Thodrol is itself a part of a larger Nyingma terma (treasure text) discovered by the tertön (treasure revealer) Karma Lingpa in the 14th century. Here we offer a handful of contemporary commentaries on this traditional text from authors such as Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Tulku Thondup, Judith Leif, and Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
