Kannon

Kanzeon! Hail to Buddha! We are one with Buddha!
Bound to the Awakened One, and the Buddha, Dharma, and Sanga. Always blissful,
We are pure. In the morning thinking of Kanzeon; in the evening, thinking of Kanzeon.
Continuous thoughts rise from our hearts; those thoughts never leave our hearts!
In memory of Seiko-in Shunso, the Great Buddhist Lady Myoen
Respectfully brushed by the old monk Hekiun of Zugan[-ji].

Gallery: Miura Joten

Scroll Notes: New mounting, with wooden box, in excellent condition.

This piece was brushed by Joten in memory of one of his parishioners. Joten was equally skilled at doing distinctive portraits of both Daruma and Kannon. His Kannons are a bit homely, but with a sense of being down-to-earth, someone we could actually encounter in our daily lives. This is a fine example of Joten's brushwork, in excellent conditon

Miura Joten was a longtime abbot of Zuigan-ji in Matsushima, and also served as primate of the Myoshin-ji branch of Rinzai Zen. Joten was a prolific and creative Zen artist.
