Hirata was as much a philosopher as a Zen master, studying under Hisamatsu Shiníichi at Kyoto University, and later taking courses in German philosophy at Heidelberg University. The intellectual Hirata wrote many books on Zen philosophy, and he had a large number of †foreign disciples. Hirata was appointed chief abbot of Tenryu-ji in 1991.
