This enso is empty, lacking an inscription or even a signature. It has a light, playful quality to it. Unlike the brushwork of a severe Zen master, this enso appears more laid back.
Shimizu Hian (1883–1975) was a well-known politician, poet, and painter. He had careers in banking and industry before being elected mayor of Nikko, home of the magnificent Toshogu Shrine and Chuzon-ji Temple. Hian started wring poetry in his thirties and became famed as the "Poet Mayor of Nikko." Happy-go-lucky Hian spent his later years composing poems, brushing calligraphy, and creating many paintings.
