When the Emperor Wu asked Bodhidharma, "What is the First Principle of Buddhism?" he replied, "Vast emptiness, nothing holy." That sums up the Zen interpretation of Buddhism: "All theories and doctrines are essentially worthless, more confusing than enlightening, and Buddha-nature is beyond holy or profane." Kaio's Darumas are quite impish and full of Zen humor.
Furuhata Kaio, longtime abbot of Kokusei-ji in Okayama, also served as 625th abbot of Myoshin-ji. Kaio was a creative Zen artist. His zenga are bright and graced with good humor.
