Miura Joten was born in Sendai in northern Japan. He was a Dharma heir of Matsubara Banryu, and served as longtime abbot of Zuigan-ji in Matsushima, one of the most beautiful Zen temples in Japan. Joten was also primate of the Myoshin-ji branch of Rinzai Zen from 1949 to 1952. He was a creative and prolific Zen artist.
