Who is this course for?

Tai Chi for Every Body is just that, for everybody. Whether you’re standing like a tree or sitting like a mountain—through its flowing movements, Tai Chi brings benefit to all shapes and sizes, transforming perceived limitations into a source of beauty and power. Through gentle, circular movements, Tai Chi sees the body as fluid and redefines preconceived notions of strength and power, blending the line between disability and ability.

“Unlike modernity’s popular social constructs, Tai Chi Chuan does not view the power of the body as tangible and quantifiable or as simply muscular strength and anatomical perfection. Instead, it understands “power” and “body” as fluid and contextual, power being the manifestation of a gentle, integrated mind and body flowing as a system.”
Zibin Guo,  Adaptive Tai Chi

ABOUT THIS COURSE

In this 10-week online course, Dr. Zibin Guo, a professor of medical anthropology and Tai Chi Chuan master, will introduce us to a series of seven moves or postures that can be practiced sitting or standing, forming the basis of a Tai Chi practice that will last you a lifetime. The classes will be taught live via Zoom with recordings available the same day for viewing anytime.

In each session you will:
1. Learn, practice, and review each move in the 7-posture Adaptive Tai Chi series
2. Experience the healing and empowering qualities of Tai Chi
3. Study principles like centering the body & mind, rooting, simplicity, and flow.

Tai Chi has a profound way of engaging the mind to empower the body, whatever its condition and ability. Founded on the philosophy that vulnerability is a universal experience—not something that’s limited to our beliefs about ability—Tai Chi supports the idea that power manifests from moving with the calm, gentle force of an integrated body and mind. This approach challenges polarizing assumptions about strength vs. weakness and asks us to widen our definition of human value and potential as we envision and experience what’s possible for our body at any stage of our life.

WHAT IS ADAPTIVE TAI CHI?

“Tai Chi Chuan is fundamentally an art of transforming the ‘weak,’ ‘vulnerable,’ and ‘disabled’ into a source of force through flowing, gentle, simple, and unified body movements. The process of cultivating this force not only provides tremendous therapeutic benefits to all but also empowers us to find flow through the rigidities of our social worlds.”
Zibin Guo,  Adaptive Tai Chi

Adaptive Tai Chi is a modern adaptation based on the principles and movements of traditional Tai Chi Chuan. Through years of experience both in his personal practice and with a wide range of individuals with unique and varying abilities, Dr. Guo chose a series of movements from the Yang and Chen-style Tai Chi that are best suited for all types of bodies. In this course, you will learn a flowing sequence of seven movements that can be performed in two modalities: sitting and standing.

Often praised for its beauty, this timeless practice benefits people of all ages and abilities. More than a tool for wellness, Tai Chi is a holistic approach to living in harmony, celebrating diverse abilities, and bringing people together to heal, grow, and experience natural power and flow.

PRAISE FOR ZIBIN GUO

Slide

“Whether for general health care or rehabilitation, Dr. Zibin Guo’s system is a practical and empowering version of Tai Chi for a variety of physical and mental abilities. I celebrate this resource as both a health care provider and a teacher of Tai Chi and Qi Gong! It facilitates the art of Tai Chi throughout life’s changes and challenges.”
Sally Chang, teacher and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Slide

“Western medical research now supports what has been known for centuries in the East: Tai Chi is one of the most effective tools for restoring and maintaining health across the lifespan. Drawing on decades of training in Tai Chi and frontline healthcare research, Dr. Zibin Guo beautifully transmits the essential therapeutic principles of Tai Chi that integrate mind, body, and spirit.”
Peter M. Wayne, PhD, author of The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi

Slide

“Zibin Guo brings the benefits of Tai Chi to everyone through demonstrating forms for seated practice and other adaptations. Ultimately, Tai Chi’s benefits are not from physical exercise alone. They come primarily from feeling and flowing life energy in a relaxed state of moving meditation. That’s why physical disability is not a barrier to developing Chi.”
Master Waysun Liao, author of T’ai Chi Classics

Slide

“Empowering the spirit is as essential to well-being as is movement. Dr Guo has created a powerful combination of movement and meditation that gives people with mobility limitations access to ‘flow’ as part of everyday life. I highly recommend this book to any professional working with people with mobility issues and to people who use mobility assists.”
Mary Gannotti, PT, PhD, Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
