Our deepest nature is wakeful and wise—and through training, we can bring that nature forth to profoundly transform our lives.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Why do we feel inadequate or incomplete so much of the time? And what, if anything, can we do about it? According to Phakchok Rinpoche, the answer lies in tapping into the power of dignity. This sense of dignity is not something others confer upon us, but rather the quality of our basic nature. Although dignity is inherently available, we seldom experience it, and instead often find ourselves plagued by feelings of self-doubt and fear.

The Power of Dignity draws upon the rich wisdom of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and Phakchok Rinpoche’s own experiences and insights. This exploration leads us to investigate the causes of our own discontentment and to discover our inner power.

In a world confronted with enormous challenges—such as catastrophic climate change, social injustice, economic inequality, etc.—the question of how to live a life of deep fulfillment becomes ever more urgent. This training in dignity is an amazing tool for filling that void. According to the teachings of Buddhism, dignity is the power that comes from knowing decisively that our heart is pure and complete. This understanding enables us to maintain balance and calmness in our daily lives as we reshape the sense of who we are. By cultivating dignity, we learn to develop genuine compassion and wisdom along the way.

COURSE CURRICULUM

1-3

LESSON 1

Meet Your Inner Dignity

In this first lesson, Rinpoche uses “vajra pride” to describe dignity. Vajra is like a diamond, the hardest of all stones. “Vajra pride” is deeply rooted in our inherent pure nature and has the qualities of strength and stability. Our ordinary pride, on the other hand, is associated with negative emotions based on inflated ego; it is unstable and can easily be crushed. To cultivate dignity, or vajra pride, it is important to begin with checking our motivation and making aspirations.

2-3

LESSON 2

Discover the Obstructors of Your Inner Dignity

Negative emotions disturb the mind and obstruct our inner dignity. The emotions that disturb our mind vary in strength depending on the degree of our mind’s stickiness. We can know ourselves better by getting to know our negative emotions and the sticky quality of our mind. It can be very healing to treat our negative emotions and sticky mind with gentle kindness, without judgment or blame. In this lesson, you’ll find meditation exercises to work with your negative thoughts and emotions and become a genuine friend to yourself.

LESSON 3

Explore the Roots of Obstruction

The eight worldly concerns of gain and loss, pleasure and pain, praise and blame, and fame and disgrace pervade our daily lives. We are so used to their presence that we are unaware of how they dominate our thinking. They are the roots of our judgment and discontent. Simply noticing and not judging them will lessen their power over us and free us from the tyranny of self-judgment and self-hatred. In this lesson, you will find practices on loving-kindness and compassion to act as an antidote to judgment.

LESSON 4

Uncover the Heart of Dignity

We all have the good heart to want to help those in need. But our capacity for compassion might be limited because of our habit of cherishing ourselves over others. True compassion can arise only when we see others as equal: like us, they also want to be happy and to not suffer. In this lesson, we will learn how to open our heart and mind through the practice of the four immeasurable qualities of love (loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.) By reducing our self-cherishing tendency, we will grow in dignity and power to help others as well as ourselves.

5-2

LESSON 5

Cultivate Genuine Compassion

Our compassion can become more stable, inclusive, and effortless when it transcends emotions and is anchored by dignity. If we are angry, our compassion will be angry compassion. If we are judgmental, our compassion will be judgmental compassion, and we may act like moral police. These kinds of compassion are not genuine because they are focused on our own agenda. In this lesson, we will learn how to exchange ourselves with others to develop genuine, agenda-free compassion.

LESSON 6

Awaken the Power of Dignity

In this final lesson, we focus on awakening and stabilizing our dignity. We must remember that our dignity can never be lost, even though we may temporarily lose contact with it. Awakening dignity is a process, and it is inevitable that we will make mistakes along the way. In this lesson, we will learn how to amend our mistakes and restore our relationship to dignity by applying the four powers of (1) remorse, (2) support, (3) commitment, and (4) antidote. This lesson also includes a short and important teaching on dying with dignity.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

Base-Price-400x400

Phakchok Rinpoche is a popular and beloved spiritual teacher with a uniquely dynamic and engaging style. Since completing the traditional Tibetan Buddhist education at the age of twenty-three, Rinpoche has taught at centers and universities across the world. Rinpoche’s sharp insight into contemporary global culture makes his teachings unusually accessible and relatable to the everyday lives and concerns of Western audiences. In addition to teaching worldwide, Rinpoche also directs monasteries and practice centers in Asia and the Americas. He resides in Nepal, where he oversees a wide range of humanitarian and educational projects and a translation and publishing group.

PRAISE FOR PHAKCHOK RINPOCHE

“Phakchok Rinpoche is an emerging stakeholder of the Buddhadharma who has trained under some of the greatest teachers of the century. His efforts to create a dialogue between the Buddhadharma and Western philosophy and thinking are greatly welcomed.”

—Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche

“Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche taps into the essence of fearless dignity and provides a step-by-step experiential process to gently clear away the layers of “clouds” (habitual patterns) that obscure certainty in our innate basic goodness. In this way, Rinpoche guides us to recognize our own true nature and deftly illustrates how such recognition is an essential first step in seeing the fundamental nature in all beings. By providing the tools for stabilizing this clear view of unchanging reality, Rinpoche helps us cultivate the skillful means to treat ourselves and others with more awareness, loving-kindness, compassion, and wisdom."

—Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, New York Times best-selling author of THE JOY OF LIVING

“An extraordinary and invaluable guide to life and practice by a meditation master whose great compassion has brought the dharma to our everyday lives.”

—Roshi Joan Halifax, author of STANDING AT THE EDGE and abbot of Upaya Zen Center
