Audience

This course is intended for R.N.s, M.S.W.s, L.P.N.s, and other health-care professionals who want to expand their knowledge about the dying process and enhance their ability to interact effectively with the dying.

Purpose

Nurses and other health-care professionals are increasingly required to face end-of-life issues in their work with patients and their families. The purpose of this course is to provide a fresh and honest perspective on the subject of death and dying that incorporates valuable guidelines for interacting effectively with people who are terminally ill. Specific ways to anticipate and address physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs throughout the stages of dying are offered. Many practical and useful suggestions are presented that can greatly assist caregivers.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand how terminally ill patients can experience emotional and spiritual healing, even when they can't be cured
  • Explain why Western medicine's focus on curing disease has led to inadequate care for the dying
  • Describe the defining characteristics of palliative care
  • Discuss at least three different ways that death denial can impede nurse-patient interactions
  • Demonstrate new ways to behave around the terminally ill and their families
  • Understand the pivotal role that nurses can play in the coordination of palliative care
  • Understand what to expect during the dying process
  • Explain how fear and denial of death harm the dying
  • Describe techniques that can help promote a peaceful environment for the dying and their loved ones
  • Explain how to meet the changing physical and emotional needs of the dying
  • Describe specific strategies that can improve a caregiver's ability to interact effectively with the dying
  • Apply a relaxation technique that can be used when interacting with a dying patient

How to Obtain Credit for the Course

  1. Read the textbook, Sacred Passage: How to Provide Fearless, Compassionate Care for the Dying by Margaret Coberly.
  2. Print out the answer sheet and the course evaluation sheet.
  3. Read the questions on the course test and record your answers on the answer sheet.
  4. Once you've completed the test, fill out the course evaluation sheet.
  5. Be sure to fill in all the information required on the answer sheet and the course evaluation sheet, and please make certain to put your name on your essay.
  6. Keep a photocopy of your completed answer sheet and course evaluation sheet for your records.
  7. Mail the answer sheet, the essay page, the evaluation sheet, and a check or money order for $49.95 to the address specified on the course evaluation sheet.
  8. Allow two weeks for the return of your certificate of 20 contact hours of continuing education. Note that a passing score of 70 percent is required to earn a certificate.
