The Shangpa Kagyu tradition was founded by Khyungpo Naljor, a student of both Sukhasiddhi and Niguma, Tilopa's student and Naropa's sister. It has always existed apart from the main Kagyu tradition, though since the time of Jamgon Kongtrul has been cared for by some Kagyu lineage holders.
