Takuan Soho

Takuan Soho (1573–1645) was a Zen monk, calligrapher, painter, poet, and sword master. Like his friend and colleague Yagyu Munenori (author of The Life-Giving Sword), for whom he wrote The Unfettered Mind, his philosophy of the sword is thoroughly imbued with the spirit of Zen.
